The Rhythm of the Blue Crab Season

Blue crabs start showing up in the Bay in earnest around May, when water temperatures climb above 50 degrees and the crabs begin moving out of the mud where they've spent the winter. The season runs through November, though by October the action slows and the watermen are chasing a smaller, more scattered population. When the water cools enough in late fall, the crabs dig back down into the bottom sediment and stay there until spring. They don't feed, don't move, just wait. The Bay holds them until it warms again.
